How 22-Year-Old Ryan Emmons Changed The Bottled Water Industry

With so many frightening environmental reports being released, consumers are more and more conscious of the social and environmental impacts of the products that they choose. In the last ten years, it has been reported that the 70 million or so bottles of water that Americans consume each day are tremendously harming our planet.

That’s why 22-year-old Ryan Emmons decided to revolutionize the concept of bottled water back in 2012. According to Ladisco, when he launched Waiakea Water, his intentions were to create a product as socially responsible as possible.

Emmons got the idea for his bottled water company while he was on vacation in Hawaii with his family. He discovered the Waiakea Springs where water collects after filtering through 14,000 feet of the active Mauna Loa volcano. As the water trickles down the porous volcanic rock, it collects essential electrolytes that keep the body hydrated. Plus, the water picks up silica, a nutrient that has been shown to prevent Alzheimer’s and other common ailments. The water is also highly alkaline, balancing out acid levels in the body.

The water is sustainable as well. While many popular bottled water companies gather their water from unsustainable sources, Waiakea Water comes from an area that sees high levels of rainfall. Because of this rainfall, the water that is used to create Waiakea Water is replenished within a month.

Emmons’ company also has an ethical edge. Together with Pump Aid, a charitable organization known for donating clean water to impoverished regions around the world, the company donates 650 liters of clean water for every liter of Waiakea Water purchased. So far, more than 5 million liters of clean drinking water have been donated.

Additionally, the packaging is environmentally-friendly as it is made with recycled materials. The manufacturing process is certified carbon neutral.

The company is now valued at over $10 million and managed to grow over 4,000 percent in its first three years. The success of Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water proves that consumers are more conscious of environmental and ethical challenges than ever before.
