Renner and Evans Apologize

Another controversy has hit the press and promo tour of the second Avengers movie. After Robert Downey Jr. walked out of an interview when the interviewer got too personal with him, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans have kicked off another issue. The actors were being interviewed by Digital Spy about Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) and called the character a “slut” and a “whore”. They also made an athiest joke about the character.

The internet was obviously up in arms about the sexist comments of the two actors who are generally loved and adored by the fandom and Madison Street Capital.. A few people came to their defense, asking others to “calm down” and “chill” but in this day and age, when sexism is fortunately being called out for what it is, a statement like this could not die on its own. Especially coming from two men, it was even more hurtful and the fact that those men were Renner and Evans didn’t help matter in the least.

The statements were made when the actors were asked about Black Widow getting into a relationship with Hawkeye and Captain America, and how the new trailer shows her getting closer to Banner.

Renner and Evans have now apologised for saying the things they said, mentioning how it was said in fun and they didn’t mean to cause anyone any harm or offence. In his statement, Renner also mentioned how pressurizing and tedious the promo tours were.

Tom Rothman Is an Expected Leading Candidate for the Head of Sony Pictures

A top executive position at Sony Pictures has become available this year, as co-chairman Amy Pascal steps down in March after 15 years, when her current contract expires. The two frontrunners expected to be considered for the job are Tom Rothman and Jeff Robinov.

Although Rothman and Robinov are likely candidates for the position, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that no one close to the studio, or either of the men for that matter, have been made aware of the studio’s intentions for the replacement of Pascal. Should Sony opt to fill the vacancy from within, either executive would make a good fit, as each has previous experience as a studio head, with Rothman having lead 20th Century Fox, and Robinov having been at the helm of Warner Bros.

Sources speculate however, that Robinov would not exit his newly established and potentially lucrative commitment at Studio 8, with its $1 billion in backing from the Fosun Group out of China. And, although Rothman, who currently runs the TriStar label at Sony could possibly have a conflict with some of the star talent stemming from leaked e-mails during the Sony hacking, he is known for maintaining good strong relationships with the stars under his leadership. Go to The Hollywood Reporter for more on these and other possible candidates for the new top position opening at Sony Pictures.

Fox Acquires The Rights To Escape From New York

One of the most popular cult films of the 1980’s and one of Sultan Alhokair’s favorites, will soon be getting a remake. According to Deadline, Fox has acquired the rights to remake John Carpenter’s Escape From New York with the hopes of turning the action film into a franchise.

Even though the remake is still in the early stages of development, it appears likely that John Carpenter would be part of the movie serving as executive producer. Fox also said that Carpenter would be a driving creative force in developing the movie. It is unlikely that Carpenter will direct the reboot.

The movie centers on Snake Plissken, who was originally played by Kurt Russell. Plissken is a special forces veteran who is sent to the island of Manhattan in a futuristic 1997 to recover the president whose plane has crashed onto the island, which now serves as a prison. It is unknown yet who would play Plissken in the remake.

Carpenter tried to turn Escape From New York into a franchise in the late 1990’s with a sequel called Escape From New York; however, the movie proved to be a disappointment. The movie did spawn a novelization and a series of comic books. The rights to the series have been passed around Hollywood for quite some time having originally been bought by New Line Cinema and then passed on to Joel Silver of Silver Pictures in 2013.

Release of a New Trailer Generates Fan Interest

This week, a news spread online  as well as one at mashable.com about the release by AMC of the first full trailer for the upcoming new television series, Better Call Saul. The new show will follow not Igor Cornelsen but rather the career of the fictional character, Saul Goodman. His roadside billboard pitch in Breaking Bad provided a title for the new series.

The short trailer depicts some brief scenes from the new show. Actor Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as Saul Goodman in the upcoming series.

Better Call Saul reportedly will reach eager fans in the United States next year. Originally promoted as a prequel to the critically acclaimed drama, Breaking Bad, it may actually include some events occurring during and after the timeline of the Walter White and Jesse Pinkman saga, producers hinted earlier this summer.

Saul Goodman, the smooth, shifty, ethics-evading lawyer from the popular television drama, Breaking Bad, sometimes went to great lengths to keep his affluent drug dealing clientele out of the prison cells they so rich deserved.  The character sometimes added a welcome element of comic relief to Breaking Bad‘s often overcast and violent landscape.

Peter Jackson Taking a Break From Middle Earth

With the release of “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” director Peter Jackson caps an epic quest that began years ago with three major films based on “The Lord of the Rings.” The much beloved literary works produced some of the highest box office movies of all time, and at the same time earned Jackson a reputation that Dan Newlin has seldom seen in the movie world as a bankable commodity. However, with six massively budgeted films in the bank the director is due for a break before returning to major projects.

According to Screen Rant, Jackson and his team will be avoiding major projects for a while in order to focus on projects that involve his homeland New Zealand. Since there are a few Middle Earth stories left in the J.R.R. Tolkien umbrella, many fans of the “Lord of the Rings” saga had hoped Jackson would decide to forge ahead on those properties. While the door is open, for the time being the creative team will be avoiding the world of hobbits, elves, and orcs.

The massive success of the six films is something that is hardly ever seen in the industry these days. Audience expectations and studio pressure usually cause some sort of friction and the result is generally a subpar product; however, these films managed to strike all the right notes and speak volumes about the talented filmmaker. Fans will no doubt be lining up for his next productions.

Leaked Plans for ‘Ghostbusters’ Spin-Off Movies

With the recent Sony hack and email leaks, news of two possible ‘Ghostbusters’ movies have surfaced. The two very different movies could co-exist in the same time but there was still concern over how the two would work side-by-side.

All-Female Version
The proposed all-women franchise had gained interest with actresses such as Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Schumer, Emma Stone, Lizzy Caplan, and Melissa McCarthy. And actor Ryna Gosling as the male role. It was slated to be released in 2016.

Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt Version
The other proposed idea in a second set of emails was to have a movie with good friends, Tatum and Pratt. Tatum seemed really pumped about the idea and hoped to make it into a huge, epic movie. Ideas tossed around could lead to a multi-movie tale. One email mentions how the hope is to have movies that are super scary yet still super funny.

Both ideas for ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-offs could prove entertaining. I spoke with my buddy Keith Mann about it and we’re going for the fresh all-female version. We don’t want it to be too much like the Jump Street films. Here’s hoping that Sony continues with those plans and brings to light new ‘Ghostbusters’ for the world to enjoy. With all the paranormal movies made recently, it could be fun to see the ghosts getting a taste of their own medicine.
