For Shaygan Kheradpir, the Sky is not the Limit

Cornell University awarded Shaygan Kheradpir his Ph.D., masters, and bachelors degree in electrical engineering with an emphasis on control systems. Shaygan Kheradpir on list.ly is a tech and business executive and many projects have succeeded under his supervision including Verizon’s deployment of FiOS, Barclays’ Transform Program and Pingit mobile money system, and Jupiter Networks’ launching of the Integrated Operating Plan while serving as the chief executive officer.

GTE Corporation is where Shaygan Kheradpir’s career commenced. He worked in their Boston labs where he managed, controlled and routed their networks. It did not take long for Shaygan to be appointed the head of software systems lab.

At the software systems lab, Kheradpir recruited and built a world class organization that aided towards the development of America’s first national network management platform for the corporation that put together transmission, switching, and infrastructure.
The platform was known as Telephone Operations Network Integrated Control System, and it enabled GTE to consolidate the network business it was running to one that consolidated network operations for the corporation and was highly efficient. In so doing, Shaygan took GTE to another level of success in the industry.

Shaygan then transferred to its headquarters in Dallas where he oversaw the development for all the corporation’s units of internetworking, wireline, information, and wireless systems. It was during this period that Shaygan and his team rebuilt and nationalized GTE’s core system with a focus on modern computer science. This action drove GTE’s operational success and improved the cost structure for the corporation significantly.

In 2000, Verizon was formed after Bell Atlantic and GTE merged making Shaygan move to New York City where he was named the president of the eBusiness Unit and later on appointed as Verizon’s chief information officer. While at Verizon, Shaygan deployed his techniques in a bid to achieve breakthrough results for the corporation. One of the remarkable methods used was recruiting and assembling great talent that were keen on introducing products and services that captured the attention of the consumers.

At Barclays Group, Shaygan was the chief operations and technology officer. Shaygan brought his skills at Barclays and came up with innovative products that mattered to the lives of the consumers such as Cloudit and Pingit.

Juniper Networks then appointed him as their chief executive officer in January 2014. Upon his appointment, Shaygan introduced his vision for Jupiter, which was focused on the company embracing highly intelligent networks, hybrid cloud ecosystems, and ensuring enterprise customers and service providers are viewed through a similar lens.
Other than being a business and tech expert, Shaygan has other activities up his sleeve. The Cornell University Engineering Council and the Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology have appointed him as a member of their boards. Also, from 2007 to 2010, the YMCA of Greater New York had appointed him to serve on their Advisory Board.

A Look at the Career of Shaygan Kheradpir, Technology Executive

Shaygan Kheradpir is a business and technology executive who has had a long and illustrious career. Born in London, Shaygan Kheradpir spent much of his childhood in Iran before moving to Switzerland in his high school years. He attended University in the United States, where he earned a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate at Cornell.

His early career started off at GTE Laboratories in Boston, where he was responsible for network routing, management, and control. His hard work led to an excellent reputation and respect within the company, and he eventually moved up to Chief Information Officer. One of his most important achievements during his time there was being involved with the development of TONICS (Telephone Operations Network Integrated Control System), an innovative network management platform that allowed GTE to consolidate its network business into something highly efficient for the company.

After the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic to form Verizon in 2000, Shaygan Kheradpir on facebook moved to New York City, where he served as the president of the eBusiness Unit, and then the Chief Information Officer for Verizon. Here he managed to achieve similarly excellent results for Verizon, recruiting some of the world’s top talent and developing innovative, award winning products such as FiOS Interactive TV and internet streaming. FiOS (fiber optics to the home) and its infrastructure became a 12 billion dollar business penetrating over a third of market share in areas where it operates. His work also greatly reduced costs for Verizon, through a combination of negotiations with vendors, improving the use of IT assets, and outsourcing to countries such as India.

After serving 11 years at Verizon, Kheradpir joined Barclays as Chief Operating Officer of the Global Retail and Business Bank in 2011 – here he contributed to the development of the Pingit mobile payments software and the Transform program. Kheradpir was then promoted to Chief Operations and Technology Officer under Antony Jenkins, the then Chief Executive of the company.

More recently, Kheradpir has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Juniper Networks, where he launched an Integrated Operating Plan in order to reduce expenses. He served as the company’s CEO from January 2014 to November 2014.

Besides his work with many prominent technology companies, Kheradpir served on the Advisory Board of the YMCA of Greater New York from 2007 to 2010, as well as a board of the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology from 2010 to 2013. He is also a member of the Cornell University Engineering Council.

I have a growing interest in spirituality and in my search for sources to read on how to incorporate spirituality into business, I stumbled across this blog Citizen Shame. This blog starts off claiming that he isn’t just about business. With what I have read about Joseph Bismark’s upbringing, I draw the conclusion that he is a spiritual leader that knows business.

He is then described as a man who not only guides, but leads in every aspect of his life. He has lived with monks from the age of nine until the age of seventeen. Such discipline and experience had led to many doors opening for him. This has also led to the development of a style of management that is less of a dictatorship and more of a consulting style of leadership. 

This article has provided a lot of information about Bismark that has inspired me and fascinated me. I can learn a lot from his example.
